Here are some excerpts and story lines:
Race Director’s Welcome …The Derby arrives in Dunwoody!
Race Week in Akron… “Over 550 drivers were present, with participants from Japan, Germany and across the globe. The Bleachers on both sides were filled to capacity. All 550 stock, super stock, masters, and rally division local champions paraded down the hill. It was an impressive sight. Tony Stewart and other NASCAR drivers took an exhibition run and the racing began.”
Driver Bio: Jonah Cloer, age 11, is in the 5th grade at Austin Elementary, where he is in the Discovery Program. …Jonah is also planning to be in the 2012 London Olympics as a table tennis competitor. Jonah will be driving a Super Stock car sponsored by Kapp Koncepts, a leading Dunwoody web designer. Jonah is the Grandson of Mike Davis, Governor of Dunwoody, which is a whole other story….
Derby Flashbacks: “I watched a young boy become a man today. He had never seen a gravity race before, much less drive in one. In fact, he had only driven his racer in his driveway. He had no idea what to expect. Oh, he had "coasted" down the street at grandma's, in his dad's 1963 soapbox, which had never won a heat, but you know a 1963 soapbox is nothing like a fiberglass kit car of today. No way. Why this thing came up to his ears, and it was hard to get in and out of.”
Derby Trivia: Did you know Patty Adcox who works for the Crier has a brother who won a local race in her home town and went on to race in the World Championships in Akron?
